State laws have been on the books for years regarding security breach notification. But newly enacted laws that tighten compliance requirements for data security as well as recent guidance from the SEC regarding disclosing cybersecurity risks and incidents is turning up the heat on companies to improve their security or face significant fines and lawsuits.

Mac attack

Network World
One early problem was Active Directory integration. ... "We're actually looking at Centrify right now," Maples says. "Our biggest challenge now with the Mac is authentication, keeping account information synchronized and setting password policies." ... "We make the Mac machine a security peer to the Windows machine," says Centrify's Macintosh Product Manager Lance McAndrew. According to McAndrew, few large organizations are monolithic environments. In addition to running Windows, most also run Unix, Linux and, now, Macs.

DOJ Cybersecurity Conference

Washington, DC

I can understand that sentiment if their organization was a small-to-medium sized business that may not be a public company and have to deal with SOX, or not in a well regulated industry that has to deal with HIPAA or FERC/NERC, but when an larger organization that is in a regulated industry states that they don't need auditing on all their servers it seems a bit of evangelism is needed to get customers to realize that it is in their best interest to do so. I would also argue that this same evangelism should be considered by smaller organizations. In this blog post and a few others to follow I am going to talk a bit more about auditing, and in this one will discuss the business needs for auditing your servers.

Securing a Cloud Computing Architecture

This chalktalk begins by demystifying the terminology around cloud computing architectures and examines the types of enterprise projects that are most commmonly being deployed to the cloud.
Centrify Enabled Samba

Samba, one of the most popular Open Source technologies in use, allows IT administrators to share directories and files hosted on UNIX and Linux systems with Windows users. However, Samba can be difficult to deploy, and its inability to centrally store UNIX identity information in Active Directory makes it unworkable in most enterprise scenarios. This white paper describes how you can use Centrify DirectControl to make Samba more secure, more manageable, and enterprise ready.

FISMA Compliance through Centralized Identity and Access Management Leveraging Microsoft Active Directory

The Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) lays out a comprehensive set of security requirements that are currently top-of-mind for federal IT managers. FISMA addresses security issues in a comprehensive manner, covering everything from identity management to physical building security. This white paper focuses specifically on identity and access management (IAM) issues, using the guidance provided by NIST Special Publication 800-53, Revision 2, Recommended Security Controls for Federal Information Systems, as a roadmap.

In these initial set of postings I am blogging on what I think are some of the key DNA elements required to be successful in this market. As expected, luck of course is DNA element #1. In my last post I discussed DNA element #2, which is your solution must be considered by the customer as being "must have," and discussed the importance of vetting this well before full-blown development of your product has begun and really determining how likely customers would be willing to replace an existing piece of infrastructure for your solution. In this post I will discuss key DNA element #3, which is you should ensure that whatever infrastructure software solution that you build and release has the ability to morph fairly rapidly and easily beyond what can be perceived as a feature of the underlying platform and into something that can become a mini-platform unto itself.
